GFS 2024 Recording Diary
Before recording - 3/7/24
Playing in a band is the best thing in the world! Well, after family of course. And a good surf is definitely up there….and friends are pretty nice too. OK, so what I’m getting at is that
playing in band is definitely a top 5, best things to do…ever!
But there’s something even better than playing in a band. And that’s playing in an originals band. Now I’m not trying to disparage cover bands, but it’s a very special journey writing a song.
Songs have personality, feelings….they’re sentient! You write them, give them life. Then you
nervously take them to the band. They add their own DNA, so it evolves and changes and
morphs into its final form, which is probably nothing like what you had in mind when you
wrote it. But it’s become something special and unique, that’s not your song anymore, it’s
now the band’s song.
Then you get to play them. We love playing our own songs at gigs, and seeing people get
into them….singing, dancing…having a great time to something that we created. It’s fucking
amazing! But a gig performance of a song is a one off…a 3-4min fleeting experience that
can never be replicated again. It may be the best version of that song that’s ever been. It
may have magic memories attached to it that last forever, but once the gig is over, that
version of that song is gone….forever.
So then, the ultimate commitment to a song must be to record it right? Once its recorded, it
can’t change. That recording becomes the lasting story of that particular performance, and
all the emotions, the blood, sweat and tears that went into the creation of our song. And that
version is not fleeting, it lasts…forever.
So, Goldfish Smarts are about to make this commitment to six of our newest creations. As of
tomorrow, we are into the studio to record….which is the best part of the best part of being in
a band. And we thought it might be a good idea to keep a diary of journey and tell the story
of how these songs go from head to heart, to studio….to Spotify!
First entry tomorrow….
May, the 4thbe with us
MoshPit 7th Birthday
This gig is one that we will remember for a long time, for all the right reasons. It was an awesome celebration for our inner city home ground and a line up of bands that was borderline mind blowing. We played after a band called Spurs For Jesus who were a live act for the ages having honed their craft over the last 30 years. We only had a 30 minute slot so had to keep it pretty tight.
An added bonus was that a German Music Journalist named Dominik came along to check out the day and took some amazing photos and gave us a really flattering write up.
As at April, 2024, Goldfish Smarts are jamming weekly on new songs. There are 8 new songs and the plan at this stage is to get into the studio to record in May / June. Only the strongest will survive, with 8 to be whittled down to 4 or 5. We are all loving these new songs and cant wait to play them live and record them.
