This page is about sharing the lyrics of our songs with a little bit about their creative pathway and a photo of the original scrawl including lines and words that were crossed out and re-written.
Pearl Jam included this concept in their earlier albums and we reckon they are not a bad guide.

So Lou Reeds song writing was the major influence behind this song. A lot of Lour Reed songs introduce a new character per verse (Walk On The Wild Side is probably the most obvious). All characters are fictional and the middle character, Michelle, formerly Rainbow was influenced by the character in the Cake song, Shirt Skirt / Long Jacket.
Butterfly Decal is pretty much our fave song. Ages ago, we messed around with an REM song called 'Whats the Frequency, Kenneth' and there is a line in that song 'Butterfly Decal, rearview mirror dogging the scene'. We were discussing throwing some covers in our set list and i was thinking of this one, but instead of mentioning the title, i just said this line. Michael loved the line and came up with this music for it. I loved it and so wrote the rest of the lyrics and the rest is history. A funny story about this song is thgat one of Stu's mates who has seen us quite a few times used to sing along and swore black and blue that the lyrics were " bada ba Yee Ha!!" Wish we had thought of that. Phil
These are not quite the original lyrics for Sensible Shoes but I must have thrown away the actual original scrawl. Originally written in 2017 and the second song we recorded. We shelved it from the live set for some time but have started playing it again. If we get it moving at the right tempo, it is a highlight. When we played it at 7th Day in Feb 2024, we got a bit excited and played the speed version but we all still loved it. For me, it is semi autobiographical, which i don't usually write. As a long term music tragic, i was that guy who was always making mix tapes and handing them out so that everyone could experience the joy. Phil
This song is about the place we are lucky enough to call home, the Northern Beaches. The title references the fact that there are so many streets that you drive down where if you look up, you will see blue water. We in the band are all water people and go out of our way not taker for granted how lucky we are. The first verse is about the Bold and the Beautiful 'pink caps make the cabbage tree procession'. The second verse is about the tenuous grip that Tony Abbott had on his seat at the time it was written and the last verse is about sneaking out for a later surf before dark.
These are the original lyrics to the song, Downtime At Moonlight. We made a challenge to write a song in the downtime of a recording day and the recording studio was called Moonlight, hence the title. I notice from this that the lyrics changed quite a bit but the structure all came together on the day. The first two verses and chorus as written is basically how it is. The third verse is kind of like a mash up of some of the notes written down. "Beer tastes different in the morning, and we're all old and stubbled. There's Lou Reed on the cover of a magazine and the walls are all lined and doubled. We all had some input in this song and i don't think we have played a gig when we have not played this song. Nor probably will we. For the line about 'across te lane there's a cold cold change' , imagine us sitting outside while the drums are being recorded and we hear Cold Cold Change ringing out from Jim Moginie's studio across the lane. We thought we had been kissed by the gods.
This song is Man About Town. I actually wrote it quite a few years before we recorded it. We tried it with some different music and it didn't quite feel right. Once Michael paired it with this music, it just felt right and has now turned into a band and crowd fave. The song highlights the quality of Mike's bass guitar and gives a great platform for Mo's harp. Please excuse the wine drops on the page. I hope you understand. Phil
CIGARETTES, PLAYING CARDS, BOARD WAX, SUPERSTARS - Our longest song title but one that i love saying and love singing. When i wrote it, i went out of my way for it not to mean anything but then when it was written, some meaning came to light. "You really don't know the reality that's been, like a poem scrawled down behind the paint." This is the first line and is about a wall with a really profound poem scrawled on it, but then the wall was painted over and the poem was rediscovered years later when the paint was scraped back.
